1914 Manaós Athletic

O técnico da seleção inglesa, Roy Hodgson não queria que sua equipe jogasse em Manaus. Antes mesmo do sorteio da Copa do Mundo, realizado em dezembro do ano passado, na Costa do Sauípe, na Bahia, ele já havia dito que a capital do Amazonas era a cidade a ser “evitada” por conta do calor e da distância.

Quando o sorteio começou logo veio a grande surpresa: a Inglaterra não só jogaria aqui como ainda enfrentaria a Itália em um clássico europeu em plena Arena da Amazônia, no dia 14 de junho deste ano.

Mas a pergunta que não quer calar é: - Afinal, é tão difícil para os ingleses jogar futebol em Manaus? Se depender da própria história do futebol amazonense a resposta certamente será não.

O que o treinador da Inglaterra e muitos ingleses certamente desconhecem é que foram eles mesmos que trouxeram o futebol para Manaus e, não satisfeitos, ainda fundaram um time (só de jogadores ingleses) e fizeram história conquistando o primeiro Campeonato Amazonense de Futebol disputado em 1914, há exatos 100 anos com o Manaós Athletic Club.

Fundação

O Manaós Athletic foi fundando pelos ingleses no ano de 1908. A equipe só admitia jogadores britânicos. Naquele tempo a presença inglesa era forte na cidade Manaus, que vivia o início da decadência do Ciclo da Borracha, período em que a capital teve a economia impulsionada pela venda do látex extraído das seringueiras.

O time era basicamente formando por engenheiros, comerciantes e bancários ingleses que viviam na cidade. “Eles moravam na Vila Municipal que era a base da comunidade inglesa em Manaus”, atesta o historiador Gaspar Vieira Neto, 38.

Primeiro time

O Manaós Athletic se tornou o primeiro grande time local e o único que conseguia fazer frente aos ingleses era o time do Nacional Futebol Clube, fundando em 1913.

O primeiro torneio, em 1914, aliás, teve os dois times como protagonistas. O campeonato de 1914 foi disputado no formato de pontos corridos, só que nesta época a vitória valia apenas dois pontos e o empate valia um ponto. No final do certame o Manaós ficou dois pontos à frente do Nacional, conquistando assim o seu primeiro título. Nesta época boa parte das partidas eram disputadas no campo do Bosque Municipal e também em um campo que ficava localizado na Rua Floriano Peixoto, no Centro de Manaus.

A primeira taça do Campeonato Amazonense foi batizada de Taça Gordon. O motivo? “Ela foi confeccionada por encomenda de um comerciante inglês chamado William Gordon. Era uma taça de prata e ele ofereceu para a Liga Amazonense de Football que, em sinal de agradecimento, resolveu dar à taça o nome dele”, afirma Gaspar.

Craques

Os craques do Manaós Athletic eram os atacantes Bolivar Purcell, Cunningham, Gorvin, Burns e Barton. O time conquistou o bicampeonato em 1915, na ocasião o vice-campeão foi o Manaós Sporting.

Depois de conquistar o segundo título consecutivo o time britânico deixou a liga de futebol e seus atletas passaram a se dedicar a outros esportes. Eles ainda introduziram em Manaus o críquete, o tênis, além do basebol, mas nenhum desses outros esportes caiu no gosto da população.

O clube inglês foi extinto em 1922, mas deixou uma marca na história. O Manaós provou aos ingleses, em tempos bem mais complicados do que os dias atuais, que era possível sim não apenas jogar em plena selva amazônica como ainda conseguir resultados expressivos.

Quem sabe esta história não inspire a Seleção Inglesa a fazer um grande jogo contra a Itália, na Arena da Amazônia...

The England National Team coach Roy Hodgson did not want his squad to play in Manaus. Even before the World Cup´s Final Draw, held in last December in Costa do Sauipe, Bahia, he had already said that the capital of Amazonas state was the city to be "avoided" due to the high temperatures and long distance.

When the picking began soon came the big surprise: England would not only play here but would also face Italy in an European derby held at Arena Amazonia on June 14th of this year.

But the question to be asked is: After all, is it so difficult for the English to play football in Manaus? If it depends on the history of the local football, surely the answer will be “no”.

What the English coach and the many Englishmen are certainly unaware of is that it was them who brought football to Manaus and, not satisfied, even founded a team (only with English players), making history by winning the first Amazonas Football Championship played in 1914 , exactly 100 years ago, with the Manaós Athletic Club .

Establishment

The Manaós Athletic was founded by Englishmen in 1908. The team only allowed british players inclusion to be submitted. At that time the british presence was strong in Manaus and they lived the early years of the Rubber Cycle downfall, a period when the capital had its economy driven by the sale of latex extracted from the “rubber trees”.

The team was basically formed by engineers, merchants and english bankers who lived in the city. "They lived in the Vila Municipal neighborhood which was the consecrated English community base in Manaus," says historian Gaspar Neto Vieira, 38.

Manaós Athletic

The Manaós Athletic became the first major local team and the only adversary who could stand up the British was the Nacional Futebol Clube, founded in 1913.

The first tournament, in 1914, had the two teams as protagonists. This championship was played with a consecutive points format, but back then the victory was worth only two points and draw one point. At the end of the event, Manaós scored two points ahead of Nacional plus winning its first title. In those years, much of the matches were played in the pitch of the Bosque Municipal (municipal woods) and in a pitch that was located at Floriano Peixoto Street, in downtown Manaus.

Championship

The first Amazonas Championship trophy was named Gordon Cup. The reason? "It was made by order of an English merchant named William Gordon. It was a silver cup and he offered it to Amazonas Football League that, as a sign of gratitude, named the cup after him", said Gaspar.

The stars of Manaós Athletic were the attackers Bolivar Purcell, Cunningham, Gorvi , Burns and Barton. The team won the championship again in 1915. This time, the runner-up was Manaós Sporting.

After winning the second consecutive title, the british team left the football league and its players went on to pursue other sports. They also introduced cricket and tennis to Manaus, besides baseball, but none of these other sports caught the population attention.

The english club was closed in 1922 leaving a trace of its glory in the local history. The Manaós proved to the English, in times far more complicated than nowadays, that it was possible not only to play in the Amazonian jungle but to still achieve impressive results.

Who knows if this story does not inspire the English National team to make a great match against Italy at Arena da Amazônia (Amazon Arena).
